Interview with Portland Rapper ‘Rony’

Please tell us something about yourself.

My name is Ronaldo Rodriguez. I’m a 21 year old rapper from Portland, OR. Growing up, I listened to Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, and 50 Cent.

How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey?

When I was younger, I used to sing by myself. But was too shy to ever sing in front of anyone. As I got older I gained more confidence, and decided to pursue my music career.. Making music allowed me to express myself with no barriers. I started learning about music when I was 13 years old. I would watch YouTube videos on how to make beats, and I would just rap to them.

Who are your role models?

My Mom, of course. She was my Father and Mother growing up, and had to overcome a lot while taking care of my brother and I. Music wise, Michael Jackson Role was who I looked up to, and wanted to be like. Everything about him was just so fly. The singing, dancing, everything.

What inspires you?

I just want to learn and grow each and everyday. Be the best version of myself, and be able to provide for my family. Lastly, putting Portland on the map, and making sure Artists in my city get heard. Because, we often get overlooked, and not given a chance.

Please tell us about your Record Label.

I just recently started my own record label RRR Records LLC. And, it’s a great feeling having ownership of your music, and be able to control your career. That’s the freedom of being an independent artist. But, you also have to put in twice the work.

Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?

Making music is night and day. You have to remain focus and dedicated, while cutting out the unnecessary stuff.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The small amount of success I’ve thus far is just reaching out and getting together with other creatives – DJs, promoters, photographers, graphic designers, marketers, etc.
